This kit is an updated and improved version of the kit I began selling in 2020. The most notable change is the chip carving knife.

I’m happy to now be offering the Klötzli Hand-Sharpened and Hand-Polished #2 Chip Carving Knife with my kits—these knives are the product of a collaboration between myself and renowned Swiss knife makers Klötzli Messerschmiede. The goal was to develop a premium version of their industry standard #2 chip carving knife design that can be used to directly out of the box, which means you don’t have to learn to sharpen before you learn to carve. Klötzli picked up this challenge and ran with it, and I couldn’t be more please with the result.

Additionally, I’ve pivoted from leather strops to a synthetic strop of my own design. The strop surface is made from a linoleum/cork hybrid material composed entirely of rapid renewable materials. I have found that they perform just as well as leather strops. They are firm, with a tiny bit of give, durable, and they take honing compound well. The kit also contains a 1oz bar of Formax Green Chrome Oxide Microfine Honing Compound for use with the strop.

Another change I’ve made is to ditch the heavy, breakable marble tile sharpening flats that shipped with the original version of my kits. In addition to being lightweight and unbreakable, the acrylic tiles have the advantage of being flat and smooth on both sides, so that all four grits of sharpening film can be adhered to a single tile. To accompany this little sharpening rig I’ve also started including a a small spray bottle for spritzing the sharpening film with water.

Lastly, the practice boards that ship with this kit are now identical to the boards in my book Chip Carving: Techniques For Carving Beautiful Patterns By Hand.
